Neurosurgery in the Past, Present and Future.

“The practice of neurosurgery as we know it today is the result of centuries of evolution.”

History of neurosurgery

“The first unequivocal case of ancient brain surgical practice, known as trepanation, was observed 4,300 years ago in a Bronze Age Harappan skull,” says A R Sankhyan, a palaeoanthropologist from ASI. “A clear rim of 3 mm width at the internal border of the hole is the evidence of osteogenesis or healing, indicating that the victim survived for a considerable time after the operation.”
Trephination is the process of drilling holes in the skull to remove shattered bits of bone from a fractured skull and clean out the blood that often pools under the skull after a blow to the head or for spiritual purposes or treatment for epilepsy, headache, and mental disorders.
Much older Trephination cases has been found across the world. However this one clearly points towards a case where the person who underwent the surgery survived the drilling of the skull.
